I loved the Penny Arcade/PvP/Wil Wheaton podcasts of playing 4th Edition, so I immediately jumped on that by contacting him through dabitch (and isn't it funny how I used the Twitter account of someone in Sweden to get a MeMail to him?) and now I'm proud to say that after consulting the PHB tonight, I will have a 2nd level halfling rogue.

Kleberg County commissioners on Monday unanimously designated "heaven-o" as the county's official greeting. The reason: "hello" contains the word "hell."

"We are Ally Bank, built on the foundation of GMAC Financial Services. And with that experience we’ve learned that these times demand change and a new way of doing business. So we’re taking banking in a new direction.
We’re a bank that values integrity as much as deposits. A bank that will always be open, accountable, and honest. Yes, honest. We won’t deal in half-truths, kindatruths, or truths only buried in fine print. That’s because we don’t have anything to hide. We’re always going to give it to you straight.
That means no monthly fees, no minimum deposits, and no minimum balances. It means developing new products that give you more options, like our No Penalty CD that lets you withdraw your money if you need to. And it means keeping our promise that our rates will always be among the top. It’s just the right thing to do."
Is this bank really doing anything different, it sounds good, but the promises and products seem fairly standard.
If the financial services industry is going to rebuild its reputation, it's going to need to invest in some serious product development. Without this, it's just going to be a series of hollow promises.

Portfolio Night is an evening where thousands of aspiring art directors and copywriters come together to meet face-to-face with renowned creative directors, make contacts and gain advice on how to make their portfolios better.
Sometimes the biggest obstacle preventing you from getting face-time with a renowned creative director is the creative director's personal assistant. These gatekeepers, these secretaries, these receptionists are finely honed weapons, genetically designed to keep riff-raff like you from getting in the door.

with thanks/apologies to emvee (and perhaps weebl) for the original shatnershatnershatner gif... I felt the need to lengthen it...

As a director Tony Scott is a bit hit (Domino, Spy Game) and miss (Deja Vu, Enemy of the State) for my tastes. His latest, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, is not the first movie to be adapted from the novel by Morton Freedgood, but does showcase Scott’s trademark style.
I had planned to sit down and watch the original before hitting the screening for the new remake, but couldn’t quite find the time. So I can’t tell you how the film measures up to 1974 film with Walter Matthau. What I can tell you is the film delivers your basic “Die Hard in a subway” scenario, with smart crooks, mostly dumb cops, and a twist or two as well.
Our protagonist this time isn’t a hero. He isn’t John McClane in the wrong place at the wrong time. Denzel Washington stars as Walter Garber, a lifer in the subway bureaucracy who has been demoted pending the outcome of an investigation into his ethics. That puts the unlucky Walter at the dispatch desk when the call comes in that terrorists have taken control of a subway car with 19 hostages and are demanding $10,000,000 which must be delivered in one hour.
John Travolta is in his full scenery-eating mode as the lead terrorist. Those of you who have seen Broken Arrow or Swordfish know what I’m talking about. Though, to be fair, Pelham is better than either of those two films. What’s nice this time is that Travolta’s character has been purposely written in this manner, and there is a method and reasoning behind his madness. Travolta is allowed to be the cheesy over-the-top baddie because it is partially an act his character is putting on for Walter’s benefit.
Most of my complaints come not from the film itself, but from its genre, which is starting to grow stale. We know the terrorists will outfox the police, have a second more important secret agenda, and that stopping them will come down to our main character making tough choices. Throw in a chain of coincidences (a character happens to go in one direction, a certain bag ends up in just the right spot, etc.), and you’ll feel like you’ve seen much of this before.

Scott gives us a quick and well-paced film that thankfully never gets bogged down because it limits the amount of time you have to question all these little coincidences. Screenwriter Brian Helgeland goes one step further to suggest that fate provides a reason for these occurrences. It’s a cheap screenwriting “out,” but at least the unlikely nature of certain plot conveniences is acknowledged.
Although there are some nice supporting performances by the likes of John Turturro, James Gandolfini, and Luis Guzman, it’s really Washington’s film. Walter is a flawed character with real humanity. Although Travolta gets his share of screentime, Scott understands that this is Walter’s story and the film works best when it’s presented from his point of view. It’s only in the film’s final and weakest act where more is asked of Walter that the film begins to struggle with his character and what he is capable of. The script pushes the limits of the character a little too much in these scenes, but not enough to hurt the overall story.
Other than Star Trek, most of the bigger action films this summer have been disappointing, but here’s one that finally delivers what it promises (and a little more than I was expecting). It’s not going to set the world on fire or revamp the genre for years to come, but this new The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 is a fun, exciting, little action-thriller with a strong lead performance by Denzel Washington that may provide a couple hours respite from the summer heat.
Eddie Murphy has had, to put it kindly, a colorful career. Murphy’s name alone attached to a project has been known to make a theater full of critics groan. What happened? How did this once-funny man lose it? It’s gotten so bad I don’t even have the strength to make it to the theater to see the types of things he’s putting out these days (such as Imagine That, hitting theaters tomorrow). Now I could probably have done a worst ten Murphy films, but that wouldn’t be that hard. Instead, here are some of Murphy’s best, or at least most watchable, films. This list is a much more difficult enterprise than a “worst of” list, which is why it only includes eight films.
8. Trading Places - I’m not as big a fan of Trading Places as many are, but there’s certainly enough good here to earn it a spot on the list. Murphy stars as a street hustler whose life is switched with that of a well-to-do businessman (Dan Aykroyd). It is part of a bet between two rich guys (Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche) as to the nature of man and how someone would change if their financial situation was suddenly altered dramatically. There are some laughs and a young Jamie Lee Curtis has a supporting role as a prostitute who falls in love. The movie isn’t exactly a classic, but it’s well known and it seems like there’s not a month that goes by you can’t find it playing somewhere on cable.
7. The Shrek franchise - For the sake of space, and not repeating myself, I’ll just group all of these together. In the films, Murphy provides the voice of the annoying Donkey, the sidekick the the reclusive ogre voiced by Mike Meyers. Stalwart and true, but always hungry and never able to shut up when asked, Donkey is the classic companion you’re stuck with instead of the one you’d prefer. In many ways, Donkey is a more interesting character than Shrek and provides many of the best lines from the films (and one of the films’ most bizarre love stories). Although Steve Martin was producer Steven Spielberg’s original choice for Donkey, Murphy landed the role, providing the comic with one of the few recent ones worthy of note.
6. The Distinguished Gentlemen - No, this isn’t a great film, but it works for me. Murphy stars as a lifetime con artist who decides to use his name (which is the same as a recently deceased senator) to run for Congress. There’s plenty of nice jabs at the legislative process (the general premise is that con artists are actually better people than 99% of all politicians) and a strong supporting cast which includes Lane Smith, Grant Shaud, Chi McBride, Charles S. Dutton, and Joe Don Baker. Although it loses steam towards the end as Murphy’s character grows a conscience and risks everything to do the right thing, there’s still enough here to include it on the list.
5. Mulan - Although known better for a different animated character (which can be found lower on this list), Murphy’s first foray into the genre was with this mostly-forgotten, but darn good, 1998 Disney film about a Chinese woman who becomes a legendary warrior. Murphy provides the voice of Mushu, a guardian spirit in the form of small dragon attempting to regain his family honor by helping Mulan in her quest. A straight-to-video sequel of the film was made, but Murphy did not return to voice the character.
4. 48 Hours - You are all probably familiar with that odd-pairing buddy-cop film that Hollywood loves so much, right? Well, it all began here. Nick Nolte stars as an alcoholic chain-smoking cop willing to do anything to bring down the perp he’s after, even if it means releasing a convict (Murphy) for 48 hours into his custody in hopes of drawing out the killer (James Remar). Clint Eastwood and Richard Pryor were originally chosen for the roles, but Eastwood turned down the movie in favor of another film and the project went on the shelf for a couple years before being recast with Nolte and Murphy. The film also reunited its two stars for a mostly forgettable sequel eight years later.
3. Coming to America - If the only thing this film gave us was Sexual Chocolate and Soul Glow that would still be enough. Murphy stars as an African prince who journeys to America in search of a more suitable bride than the one his parents (James Earl Jones, Madge Sinclair) have chosen for him. Along for the ride is his trusty sidekick (Arsenio Hall), who gets a job along with the prince at a McDonald’s knock-off run by John Amos. Shari Headley is cast as Murphy’s love interest and the pair have some nice on-screen chemistry. This was the first time Murphy used heavy make-up to play multiple roles in a film (and one of the few times it worked successfully).
2. The Nutty Professor - One of the hardest times I have ever laughed in a theater was the first time I saw Murphy’s remake of Jerry Lewis’ 1963 comedy The Nutty Professor. Murphy stars in this Jekyll-and-Hyde tale of an overweight scientist who comes up with a formula that makes him slim, only to have his new arrogant second personality try and take over his life. There are many nice moments including the table scene where his family (also played by Murphy) embarrasses Sherman in front of his love (Jada Pinkett Smith) to the extent where he tries to cut his wrists with the butter knife. The movie hasn’t aged as well as I’d like, but it definitely deserves a high spot on the list.
1. Beverly Hills Cop - Originally intended as a project for Sylvester Stallone (who would later rework the original script into Cobra), this 1984 action flick is about a Detroit cop (Murphy) in Beverly Hills hunting for the murderer of an old friend and causing general mayhem (like, say, a banana in the tailpipe). Aside from a list of memorable lines, Beverly Hills Cop also produced a not-too-shabby soundtrack (featuring songs by the Pointer Sisters and Patti LaBelle). The film was an instant success, pulling in more money that year than Ghostbusters. Although the movie produced two less-than-stellar sequels, the original remains a classic and—despite continuing to make movies for another 25 years—Murphy has done nothing to equal it.
This week we begin with Dick Grayson, end with Tim Drake, and have a little fun in-between…

Batman #687 - This one should have come out before Batman and Robin #1 instead of a week after (same for Red Robin #1, which appears to take place somewhere between the two). Even if the continuity is thusly jumbled a tad, the issue nicely summarizes the state of things post-Bruce Wayne Gotham before finally giving us what we’ve paid to seen in the issue’s final frame: Dick Grayson as Batman. For good measure they threw in a little Scarecrow action, too. Worth picking up.

Uncanny X-Men: First Class Giant-Size Special #1 - This issue will be remembered for one thing, the secret origin of Wolverine. This includes a radioactive wolverine bite, Logan’s time as a Folk Singer, and his early days as a hero battling the likes of the Zombie Clowns of Budapest and B.I.M.B.O. Sadly this is only one of a series of vignettes centered around the new team members, the rest of which you could take or leave. Worth a quick look, but at $3.99 your paying more than a buck for every good page.

Sonic the Hedgehog #201 - Every once in awhile I check in with Archie Comics, then usually quickly remember why I don’t read them more often. Check out that band. Wouldn’t you want to hear them play? I would. Oh, the rest of the comic has something to do with the new queen of Eggman Empire, the return of Monkey Khan, and something about an invasion. Meh. On the other hand, that band has possibilities.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan #1 (of 3)- Who doesn’t love some Khan action? The art from Chee Yang Ong captures the look from the original film, and the important moments seem captured well on the page. In case you are wondering, no one ever did a comic adaptation for this movie. IDW Publishing remedies the situation with the first issue of this new three-issue mini-series. Better late than never. Worth picking up for Star Trek fans. Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan! Oh, that scene isn’t in this issue? Sigh, guess I’ll have to get the next one, too.

Uncanny X-Men #511 - We’re teased with the possibility of the return of Jean Grey (in body if not in spirit), but what were given is the return of Psylocke. I can live with that.

Red Robin #1 - Much as Dick Grayson and Damian struggle in their new roles, Tim Drake is having some trouble with his. I like the costume of Red Robin and I give credit to Christopher Yost for inserting a plausible reason for Drake’s choosing it as his new identity. As for the story: Fragmented look at Tim’s final days in Gotham and his world tour which has seen him lose focus but not from his ultimate goal, the search for Bruce Wayne. I’m also quite excited by the final panel which tells me one of my favorite Bat-villains (no, not Catman) will be playing an important role in the new series. The Bat-books, at least so far, appear to be in good hands.
I love my Coke, even though they got rid of that tasty Black Cherry Vanilla, but this news can’t be good for those of you who like Coke Zero.
It seem Venezuela has banned the product, from the entire country, after citing health concerns with the local bottling plant (can you still call it a bottling plant if they’re putting it in cans?). That’s right folks, Coke Zero isn’t healthy enough for Venezuela.
So, do you still want to down that can in your hand? You can read more of the story here.

Taken from Powerpigs Photostream on Flickr. There are some nice LEGO and Star Wars pics, along with many others, that are worth a look if you have the time. I’m also partial to Daydream Believer, Disposable, Hitchin’ a Ride, and Vader’s Angels.
Three little nuggets of movie news for you today. The first shot of Mickey Rourke as Whiplash in Iron Man 2 has hit the ‘net. Pretty rough looking (and I’m a little scared we’re going to get robot mash action to end the sequel, again). Also worth noting:
Jaime King has been chosen by her real-life husband to star as Bridget Bardot in an upcoming biopic. Despite some misgivings I must concede the resemblance.
And finally, much to the dismay of Buffy fans, The Flickcast is reporting Megan Fox as a possibility for the title role in the upcoming Whedon-less remake of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Kill me. Kill me now.
A little bit Jenga and a little bit Tetris, if you’ve got some free time on your hands today you might waste a few minutes trying out Stackle. Move blocks from below to make the tower taller. Be careful how you place the blocks, and, whatever you do, don’t let the whole thing fall down.
The internets were all a twitter about this yesterday, but I couldn’t quite find time to share this with you. Here’s Zach Morris showing up in place of Mark-Paul Gosselar on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
Two Jimmy Fallon posts in one day is a little odd, but, at least as far as this one is concerned, “it’s alright ’cause I’m saved by the bell.”
The host was Seth Meyers and all the winners gave five-word acceptance speeches. Monday night internet celebrities and B-list stars gathered together as the Webby Awards handed out their, well, what the hell are those statues anyway? Heating coils? You can find a list of all the winners here or spend some time watching more more 5 Word Speeches. There’s just so much you can say in five words (like say, “Webby’s? That a real award?”). Of those I watched Sarah Silverman was the most memorable, but Fallon’s was the best.

People said I was crazy for believing the Japanese were secretly building giant robots to take over the world.
Crazy, huh?
Seriously though, this gigantic Gundam is pretty damn sweet, and I kinda want one (preferably Jetfire-style) in my back yard.
So much cooler than those cows we had placed all over few years back.
Controversial contributor Warren J. Cantrell is back again with a Top 10 list that he thinks will improve the movies he’s written about. His list does not reflect the opinions of anyone at Scene-Stealers. In fact, I like to think of Warren’s writing voice as a kind of satiric-inspired Stephen Colbert, except more geared toward the uber-male demographic. If you have a Top 10 list of your own you’d like to submit, send it to eric@scene-stealers.com.
Without further ado, here is warren’s list of Top 10 Movies Ruined by a Female Presence.
USA Network has a pretty good track record, but not everything they touch has turned to gold (remember Touching Evil?). Their latest, Royal Pains, stars Mark Feuerstein as immensely talented doctor, recently fired for the death of a wealthy patient, who finds himself, against his own wishes, practicing as a reluctant doctor for hire for the rich and famous. The Pilot, as most are, is a little rough and feels like one of those shows with a better cast than writers. However, things do pick up a bit towards the end, and I’m willing to give it a few more episodes to try and win me over.
I was actually going to post something for Aaron Sorkin or Michael J. Fox, both of whom were born on this date, but that’s before I found this little clip from Natalie Portman’s appearance on Sesame Street where she admits to Elmo her lifelong desire to be an elephant. Enjoy, and Happy Birthday Natalie!

Found this on Yahoo Tech Blog:
Leave it to God to spoil the party: The Catholic churches of Scotland are speaking out against Twitter, Facebook, and other social networking technologies, which are being decried by the Church as creating an "obsessive" reliance in their users.
A message from Bishop Tartaglia, president of a Bishops’ Conference of Scotland communications group, has been sent to the 500 Catholic parishes of Scotland with instructions that it be read aloud at mass in every church.
Tartaglia writes that "we need to be wary of the inane chatter that can go on in the digital world which does nothing to promote growth in understanding and tolerance." In other words: Idle hands, when outfitted with a Twitter account, truly do perform the devil’s work.
As well, the letter naturally wonders about the safety of our children on social networking sites, worried that the minions of Satan may be on the other end of the virtual conversation.
I was in Colorado last weekend and was able to get a phone camera picture as one of the tornados was forming.
Here is a video of one and below is the picture I took about 1/4 mile away (I’m guessing).
Here is the story behind the video from the weather channel:
This weekend, when several tornadoes touched down in the West—and at least five slamming Colorado—the storm-chasing team from The Weather Channel was in the right place (Wyoming), at the right time (Friday June 5), with the right equipment. The result? An amazing look into the eye of the tornado. The video (embedded below), gives viewers a look at how tornadoes form and what happens when one turns on its side. It’s terrifying and beautiful all at once.

My ESP thinks this is cool but won’t work.
A novel experiment using Twitter by British psychology professor Richard Wiseman, in conjunction with "New Scientist" magazine, is set to be the largest ESP ("remote viewing") experiment in history.
According to Wiseman, this is how it works:
"At 3 PM (GMT) each day, I will travel to a randomly selected location. Once there, I will send a Tweet, asking everyone to Tweet about their thoughts concerning the nature of my location. Thirty minutes later, I will send another Tweet linking to a Web site that will allow everyone to view photographs of five locations (the actual location and four decoys), think about the thoughts and images that came to them in the 30 minutes before, and vote on which of the five they believe to be the actual target location. If the majority of people select the correct target, then the trial will count as a hit."

I bet Nestle Toll House Cookies is already working on a new ad campaign.
The most successful interrogation of an Al-Qaeda operative by U.S. officials required no sleep deprivation, no slapping or "walling" and no waterboarding. All it took to soften up Abu Jandal, who had been closer to Osama bin Laden than any other terrorist ever captured, was a handful of sugar-free cookies.
Abu Jandal had been in a Yemeni prison for nearly a year when Ali Soufan of the FBI and Robert McFadden of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service arrived to interrogate him in the week after 9/11. Although there was already evidence that al-Qaeda was behind the attacks, American authorities needed conclusive proof, not least to satisfy skeptics like Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, whose support was essential for any action against the terrorist organization. U.S. intelligence agencies also needed a better understanding of al-Qaeda’s structure and leadership. Abu Jandal was the perfect source: the Yemeni who grew up in Saudi Arabia had been bin Laden’s chief bodyguard, trusted not only to protect him but also to put a bullet in his head rather than let him be captured. (See pictures of do-it-yourself waterboarding attempts.)
It took more questioning, and some interrogators’ sleight of hand, before the Yemeni gave up a wealth of information about al-Qaeda - including the identities of seven of the 9/11 bombers - but the cookies were the turning point. "After that, he could no longer think of us as evil Americans," Soufan says. "Now he was thinking of us as human beings."

Stay on our side.

I announced back in April that a new version of my popular free font Anonymous™ would be available soon. That would be today.

Probably more than you ever wanted to know, but it was fun rummaging through my old stuff to piece the story together.
(Thanks, Brian!)
One of the Typographica traditions of which we’re most proud is the rotating nameplate. Each design was created and submitted by a reader, reflecting the site’s collaborative nature and keeping things fresh, while offering type and graphic designers the opportunity to show off their latest work. We’ve saved 152 of the 154 nameplates for posterity. The other two? Their fate is known only to Dr. Hermann Pütershein.
Above: A collection of 152 reader-submitted nameplates — all the way back to June, 2002. Push play. If you sit here long enough you can see them all!
Now that we have a new Typographica, it’s time for a new nameplate tradition. This redesign is all about the type, so there’s no better element to crown the page (and drive the main navigation) than a fresh typeface every few weeks.
Anyone is welcome to submit their typeface for consideration as a future Typographica nameplate. There are two requirements:
1. the typeface must fit Typographica’s ethereal and undocumented requirements for design and readability
2. we’ll request a sponsorship fee to keep the site running
The nameplate typeface will be credited in the header of every page on the site and permanently archived in the Typeface Reviews section. Please contact the editor if interested.

You’re encouraging the random and random is how you’re going to win. Random is how you’re going to discover a path through a problem that no one else has found and that starts with breathing deeply.
Even though the subject matter and approach differs, this pairs nicely with an article on A List Apart last week: Burnout, by Scott Boms.
Your life should be just that—a life
Good words, all around.

As a Typekit user, you’ll have access to our library of high-quality fonts. Just add a line of JavaScript to your markup, tell us what fonts you want to use, and then craft your pages the way you always have. Except now you’ll be able to use real fonts. This really is going to change web design.
Also worth checking out, Jeff posted a preview of the Typekit home page yesterday. Looking forward to how this will change typography and design for the web.

Volkswagen said it has named MDC Partners' Crispin Porter + Bogusky to handle creative chores in the U.S. and Canada.Havas' Arnold here had previously handled the business for the past 10 years.
Arnold has done quite a lot of good and memorable work for VW over the years, but as VW sales have been slipping lately, this serves as a potent reminder that no agency-client relationship is ever safe.
The other thing that's interesting here is that Arnold & Crispin collaborated for years on the anti-smoking "Truth" campaign, so these two agencies have a history together.
And Crispin has resigned the MINI account due to the account conflict. That'll be fought over, I'm sure.

It seems so obvious to us that the ‘only’ realistic way for a swift economic recovery is through a thorough, in-depth, rebranding scheme – starting with the redesign of the iconic US Dollar – it’s the ‘only’ pragmatic way to add some realistic stimulation into our lives! Therefore, you must take part and we really want to see what YOU would do.
I disagree with those who believe that American currency should adopt the rainbow colors popular with our international counterparts; if it ain’t a greenback, it’s not American. The above image by acquaintance Michael Tyznik smartly introduces some color while keeping our money familiar.
I’d like to see some submissions that ditched the one dollar bill for the coin, and also unload that asinine “In God We Trust” motto (not a long-standing American tradition, but rather a relic of the McCarthyistic fifties).

L’edizione 2008 è stata organizzata in tre distinte macro aree:
- Tecnologia [4CommTECH],
- Marketing/Advertising [4CommADV]
- Fumetto [4Comics].
[4CommTech]

“I realized it was fun because there were no random jerks. The Internet is actually full of random jerks that I don’t care about watching TV with. But I was using Facebook as a non-friend filter; I wasn’t using it to be more social, or to find my friends, but to weed out the non-friends.”I have a regular column in ADWEEK and here is another regular column. Its sort of about social media, there are two good ideas, one in the 2nd to last paragraph of page one, and in the 2nd to last paragraph on page 2. I think that’s a coincidence.

With the popularity of High School Musical and American Idol I’m more than a little surprised it’s taken this long for one of the major networks to trot out something like Glee. The show centers around a young high school Spanish teacher (Matthew Morrison) who attempts to relive his own glory days by reinventing the Glee Club into something cool for the current generation.
The group includes the talented outcast (Lea Michelle), the football jock (Cory Monteith), the Asian girl (Jenna Ushkowitz), the obviously gay kid (Chris Colfer), the black girl with diva attitude (Amber Riley), and the wheelchair-bound Arty (Kevin McHale). I’d go into more detail, but the pilot doesn’t spend much time actually fleshing out more than one or two of these characters. Christopher Guest fans should also look for Jane Lynch as the, at least semi-evil, cheerleading coach. I was impressed with the musical performances in the pilot, though less so with the actual plot which I found more than a little unfocused and not that well written. But, again, it’s only a pilot. If the show gets some serious tweaking it’s got a chance to be the kind of “good for the whole family” show that all networks drool over. The show will begin it’s first season in September, Wednesday nights on FOX. Check out the official site for more info.
Okay, my reasons for doing this post have probably at least as much to do with getting to use that headline as the actually story. That may sound like the title for a sketchy B-movie (most likely directed by Uwe Boll or Paul W.S. Anderson), but it’s actually a growing problem in Indonesia where the large animals have begun attacking local fishing villages.
Although still rare, the rate of the attacks has increased and fear has begun to spread around the islands (Can you blame them? They’re freakin’ Komodo Dragons, people!).

Under the new plans hundreds of new domain names could be created by the end of the year, rising to thousands in the future.
Individuals will be able to register a domain based on their own name, or any other string of letters, as long as they can show a “business plan and technical capacity”.
Companies will also be able to bid for addresses based on their brand names, although some believe they maybe faced with too much choice.
“Does Tesco want .supermarket or .groceries?” said Graham Hales, of branding consultancy Interbrand.
“Or maybe it wants .value or .everylittlehelps. The choice is endless.”

I heavily rely on Gmail for all my email communications (I know, I know…) and usually it’s extremly reliable and fast. But today it was sluggish and slow the whole morning. Up until a few minutes ago, when Gmail died completely.
Because our ISP in the office also has it’s issues, I wasn’t sure, if it really was a Google problem. So I went over to Twitscoop to see, what is buzzing on Twitter right now and within a second I knew, I wasn’t alone…
Parts of the big Twitter collective realise that something is wrong with a central part of their infrastructure, they start to tweet scream about it online and with a very short timeframe it appears on everyones radar screen…
Hey, news cycle - keep up with that! ;-)
Btw, Gmail’s IMAP and POP servers seems to be up & running, at least occasionally.
No, not by the Common Craft Show. But by Jonathan Jarvis, a student at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. As part of his thesis work he has put together a great animated clip - Crisis of Credit - that explains the financial mess, we are in right now. And he managed to explain everything in a language, everyone can understand…
Also a great example for what Citizen Generated & Social Media can achieve. I haven’t seen anything as easy to understand as this clip in mainstream media. But thanks to modern technology everyone creative enough to do it, can find the tools to create something like this clip without prohibitive high costs. And thanks to Social Media, this great content then gets distributed all over the world without the backing of a big media company…

Long before there were hi-res laser printers in every design firm and PDF specimens on every foundry website, typographers discovered, compared, and selected type using specimen books.
There is too much separation from the display to the printed page for a designer to see how the curves, the straights, and the joins truly interact. The best way to review and analyze the utility of a typeface is through viewing the samples in print. Nothing can replace this.
To this end, “FontBook” is a type reference worth much more than its weight in gold. And it weighs a lot! (More than six-and-a-half pounds, in fact.)
Some might say, “but it’s a book and it can’t be updated.” True. Containing font releases up to 2006, “FontBook” is best used in conjunction with FontShop.com and other online vendors for a more current view of what’s available. But the book offers insight not found online, such as the “see also” cross-references, and offset printed samples complete enough to really give a good idea of what you’ll get when you go to press.
This comprehensive reference is curated, organized, and printed with loving and tender care — a vital tool for keeping things original and fresh for each client and project.

Contrasting sharp serifs with rotund ball terminals, Portuguese designer Dino dos Santos evokes the vibrant work of 18th-century punchcutter Johann Fleischman with his 2008 release of Glosa. Dos Santos is clearly aiming for something beyond a revival though, and introduces enough contemporary flair and personal quirk to do so successfully.
Designed as an extended series of complementary font subsets, Glosa is well-suited for editorial design or other complex systems where a wide range in size, texture, and functionality (small caps, oldstyle figures, ligatures, etc) is desired. The face’s crisp cut gives it a lively sparkle; but for longer text, where the standard design’s angularity could become distracting, dos Santos offers Glosa Text, with bracketed serifs and other softened details.
On the other end of the spectrum, the series includes Glosa Headline, with an increased x-height, for more impact at larger sizes. Finally, it seems relevant to mention Glosa Display (even though it technically wasn’t released until early 2009); this latest addition to the series pushes Glosa’s sharp contrast to the limit, making it attractive for flashier decorative work.

We're not wired right - A view askew on design and the world around us.
Stumbled on The Playground this morning which is an experimental site presented by Rick Valicenti. (of 3ST among others. Anyways the premise of this site is to "to create an alphabet of 26 characters illuminated not to start a sentence, but to begin a thought" and there are some interesting and thought provoking type faces. (downloadable by the letter!)

Last year's GDC party was a total riot with its Cuban Fiesta theme - complete with taps, latin band, mojitos and cigars! This year's party is a Tiki theme and is being held at the Waldorf Hotel's amazing Tahitian Twilight Lounge on December 8th. The party is free for members and only $15 for non-members and if last year was any indication, the food and door prizes alone would make this event worth attending.
Details available on GDC's blog or at their events page.
A List Apart: for people who make websites
Stopdesign
Mr. Clarke advocates creating one single universal style sheet to handle all styling in IE6, and to stop worrying about making content in IE6 look anything like the high-end experience.
I’m now advocating to my clients (and to you), that where feasible, not to waste hours in time and a client’s money on lengthy workarounds in an unnecessary attempt at cross-browser perfection. Instead, you and I should provide simple but effectively designed HTML elements. This means just great typography for headings, paragraphs, quotations, lists, tables and forms and no styling of layout.
This will work well for content-focused web sites. And then maybe it’s officially time to completely drop support of IE6 for web apps.
Interesting take on the future of Wired (mag vs. website).
Wired is great print, but if the magazine can’t make money and is shuttered, taking the website down with it, I’m going to be livid. Not that making money online is easy—it’s not, especially without sacrificing your ethics and your voice—but if any mainstream outlet should be able to make the transition, it should be Wired.
I fear that may be impossible, not just for
